You will know it’s dry when you plug it in to charge and you no longer get that message. You paid over a $1000 for that phone and you’d probably like to keep it. So, for the safety of your phone, don’t charge a phone that has had its ports come in contact with water unless you have an emergency. And as others have pointed out here, Apple will not care for a phone with water damage. Even though the phone may continue to charge when you use the emergency override button, water could still be present in the phone causing slow damage to your device. Furthermore, if that pop-up shows up, it’s a good idea to follow the message and wait for the phone to fully dry before attempting to charge it. I keep getting a warning when my iPhone is plugged into it's lighting cable saying 'Disconnect Lightning Accessory' 'Liquid has been detected in the lightning connector' 'To protect your iPhone, disconnect this Lightning accessory, and allow the connector to dry.

Doing so makes it more likely the phone will get damaged. Even though the phone is water resistant you should not be intentionally getting the phone wet. Note to the wise: don’t take your iPhone in the shower with you.
